Abstract
The pressing challenges of environmental pollution and the global energy crisis necessitate the development of highly efficient and durable electrocatalysts for water splitting and the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). MXene-based materials have emerged as desirable non-precious candidates owing to their excellent electrical conductivity, tunable surface chemistry, and unique two-dimensional architectures. This review systematically summarizes their structural characteristics and surface modification strategies, with a particular focus on the intrinsic structural advantages and electronic versatility. Recent advances in catalytic performance modulation are critically discussed, highlighting the roles of heteroatom doping, defect engineering, and heterointerface construction in enhancing activity, selectivity, and stability. The latest progress in employing MXene-based catalysts for water splitting and CO2RR is then outlined, followed by a critical evaluation of the challenges associated with durability and mechanistic understanding. Finally, perspectives are provided on the rational design and sustainable development of next-generation MXene-based catalysts, aiming to facilitate their translation into practical applications in clean energy conversion.
